According to Aristotle, a speaker's capacity to convince an audience is determined by how successfully the speaker appeals to that audience in three areas:

  • logos,
  • ethos, and
  • pathos.

When these appeals are considered together, they constitute what subsequent rhetoricians have dubbed the rhetorical triangle. Logos appeals to logic, ethos to custom, and pathos to emotions.

What is the Rhetorical Triangle?

As already stated, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are the three components of the Rhetorical Triangle.

It is sometimes depicted by an equilateral triangle, with all three sides equidistant from one another to demonstrate the equal significance of each thought in effective communication and persuasion.
