Your science class is observing the organisms found in local pond water. You have discovered this paramecium and are hoping to observe how the paramecium injects food. Your lab partner suggests using an electron microscope to see all the details in 3-D. You disagree: you believe a light microscope must be used. Using the table, support your decision to use a light microscope.

The paramecium is not very small It can easily be observed using the light microscope.

In order to see the paramecium, you must stain the slide. You cannot stain a slide if using an electron

The beam of electrons used in the electron microscope is too dangerous to be used in a high school classroom environment.

You want to observe life processes. You cannot use an electron microscope to observe Iiving specimens.

Paramecium

The paramecium is an organism of about 50-300 μ long in size. This size makes the organism easily observable via a light microscope. A light microscope can magnify as high as 2000 times when the magnification powers of the ocular and the objective lens are combined.

In the same vein, observing how a paramecium feeds requires that the organism remains alive. With electron microscopes, specimens are viewed under an extremely high vacuum where no life can exist. The paramecium cannot be living under this condition.

Thus, using the electron microscope is not an option in this case.
