Who is Lord Shamash?
The father of Shamash was Sin. Shamash, the solar deity, used light to defeat darkness and evil. As the judge of both gods and humanity, he earned the reputation of being the deity of justice and equity. (According to mythology, Shamash gave the Babylonian monarch Hammurabi his code of laws.)
Gilgamesh prays to Shamash every night as they are travelling, so he is aware of which side his bread is buttered on. When the friends finally make it to the Cedar Forest, they are utterly afraid. Shamash intervenes to calm them down, reminding them that now is their chance to strike.
