Portugal was one of the earliest European countries in the scramble for Africa.
They annexed territories in eastern Africa which were ruled as a colony from 1655, and later on, Angola was ruled as an overseas province of Portugal in 1951.
Portugal granted Angola independence on November 11, 1975, when multiple Angolan nationalist forces were fighting among themselves in order to establish control over the new state.
