Many everyday Americans contributed money to help build the statue of liberty because it was their symbol of freedom, and they did not want to lose it. The statue was a gift from France, given to America in 1886 and has welcomed immigrants to the US since it was opened.Crews worked round the clock, seven days a week, for nine years to finish the Statue of Liberty.
