Add the two equations to eliminate x:
-2x + 5y = 8
                     +
 2x + 2y = 6
                     =
7y = 14   so y = 2.
Sub y into an equation as 2, so if you take the 2nd equation you get:
2x + (2*2) = 6, so 2x = 2, x=1.
