In the 20's more people were accepting of African American people. This helped Zora Neale Hurston to go to college and get an associate degree from Howard University. She was first published in the college's newspaper. She went on to live in Brooklyn in an established African American art neighborhood. She wrote short stories, wrote plays, and conducted anthropological research. She was born to parents who were both slaves. If the world hadn't shifted to accepting the African American people, she would never of been so successful.
