The French revolution which  began in 1789  lasted until 1794. King Louis XVI needed more money, but had failed to raise more taxes when he had summoned a meeting of the Estates General.

These estate generals represented the social classes of the people.

The Estate Generals

  • The first Estate were the  clergy and nobility
  • The Second Estate were privileged minorities
  • The third Estate  represented the majority of the people

This meeting soon  turned into a protest about terribly bad conditions in France and hence the Republic of France was declared.
