In his address to the U.S Hispanic Chamber of commerce, President Obama used several literary appeals to show the importance of steering the nation's economy through a crisis. He used rhetoric s to persuade his audience of the need for this in these ways:
- 1. In explaining the decline in the standard of education, he applied logos, which is the appeal to logic when he said in the 9th paragraph that; "Singapore's middle-schoolers outperform ours three to one. Just a third of our 13- and 14-year-olds can read as well as they should." Statistics were used here.
- 2. He appealed to their emotions (pathos) in the 12th paragraph when expressing that they could not afford to allow their education decline. He said; "We've accepted failure for far too long. Enough is enough. America's entire education system must once more be the envy of the world -- and that's exactly what we intend to do."
Logos which is the appeal to logical evidence is expressed in the fact that Obama quoted statistics to support his views.
This must have impressed on the minds of his audience the truthfulness and reliability of his statements. They will thus be convinced.
He appealed to their emotions by awakening the desire for success in them. This appeal would have also motivated his audience to action.
Therefore, Obama successfully used Logos and Pathos.
