Although Chinese merchants, especially those who traded in silk and porcelain, could make considerable profit via Silk Road trade, the impact on the typical Chinese peasant was negligible. Most Chinese peasants engaged in subsistence farming, and thus had little to export along the Silk Road. Furthermore, because most existed on a subsistence basis, they had little wealth with which to acquire the things arriving in China via this trade route.
