Stress can help you to motivate you to succeed. Say you are stressed about a test or quiz. A healthy way of coping and using that stress would be to plan and budget your time to study. Stress, however, is very bad for the body, since stress causes cortisol to be released from the brain (and has been linked to weight gain). Stress can only be good if you know how to handle it and tolerate it.
The body's initial reaction to stress keeps you alert, gives you a burst of energy, and allows you to face the challenge. It can protect you from harm and motivate you during the incident. It can also sharpen your concentration.
