You are a cell in the body of a giant organism. You need to quickly send a message to another cell that is a few cells way from you. You can send your message through a gap junction, or through the bloodstream with a hormone. If you need to send your message as quickly as you possibly can, how would you send it? Explain your choice.

In addition to the ECM, there are three other ways that cells (animal cells, specifically) connect to one another. The image to the right illustrates the three types of connections adjacent cells can make: Tight junctions, demosomes, and gap junctions.
