Amoeba allows each protist to move

Amoeba moves using pseudopodia.

Euglena moves using flagellum.

Paramecium moves using cilia.

What are the structures that allow the movement in different protists?

  • Pseudopodia, or protruding portions, are used by amoebas to move. Its meaning is "false feet." These are membrane elongations of the cell. With its pseudopod, an amoeba can reach out and grab a surface, using it to propel itself forward.
  • Flagellums (plural flagella), a long whip-like structure that functions as a little motor, help euglena move. On the anterior (front) end, the flagellum spins in order to propel the cell through the water.
  • Cilia have the ability to move in unison to advance a Paramecium. When a barrier is reached, the cilia travel in the opposite direction, somewhat reversing the Paramecium's forward motion.
