Canada benefited the most from the national policy by promoting Canadian industries, completing the National Railway and encouraging increased immigration into  Western Canada.

The National Policy

The National Policy was a Canadian economic program introduced by John A. MacDonald's in 1876. The national policy was anchored on three main branches.

  • Introduction of high tariffs on imported manufactured items to protect the local manufacturing industries.
  • construction of  physical infrastructure, such as roads and railroads.
  • promoting population growth, with specific focus on western Canada.

These three economic policies were termed the national policy and the aim was to boost the Canadian economy and stop its over dependence on imported goods.
