Answer:

Mohandas Gandhi

1893-1914 in Natal, South Africa

Spoke against the injustice of racial segregation     Effects: hated; thrown from a train even though he held a ticket.

Founded a political movement     Effects: some people listened.

His belief of non-violent protest developed into a political stance     Effects: mixed effect. The oppressed got on board, the Hindu radicals saw this as a violation of their god and wanted the movement stopped.

Those oppressed realized the possible liberation for themselves from Britain’s biased and cruel authority.  Most of the public was willing to follow his teachings because they were being oppressed by the British too.

Gandhi should be remembered for his peaceful attempts to liberate others. Gandhi’s example of putting his liberties and life on the line for the sake of others, inspired the same actions for Dr. MLK and Nelson Mandella. Gandhi has left a powerful legacy revealing the change that can come from peaceful protests for the cause of others.

Task 2

Mao Zedong served as a revolutionary leader bringing into reality the People’s Republic of China and served as Chairman of the Republic from 1949 until his death in 1976.

Zedong maintained the chief position at all costs. When cornered, Zedong would change his views to keep his position, or he would deter or exterminate people he was threatened by.

Zedong joined students protesting against German concessions being turned over to Japan instead of China.     Effect: there was much upheaval, and the young population caught the fire while the older population feared what might come.

Zedong unified students, merchants and workers under the Army of the Red Flag”.   Effect: a new fever with momentum for a new and unified cause.

Zedong's contempt for the pheasant-class was changed during a visit home. As he got a glimpse of their oppression, he also got a revelation of the power and impact that lay within this ‘ignorant and dirty’ class.      Effect:   the people rallied behind the movement, but the freedom they anticipated was very short-lived.

Zedong was viewed as a revolutionary with mixed views of fear and respect.

I quote one of Zedong's statements which might best characterize the legacy he left: “political power grows out of the barrel of a gun”. Perhaps Zedong's influence is seen the strongest in China’s Communist Party as it still advocates strict control over all aspects of life and its iron grip on political power has not loosened.
