Sarcasm is used to in the sense that the user or character actually means the opposite of what he or she says. It is usually used in a condescending tone. It is a device used by the author to elicit a negative emotional response from the reader. Since tone of voice cannot always be detected in writing, the revelation that a statement is sarcastic may pull away a sense of false hope from the reader.
