A mutation caused by the substitution of a single base and which results in a protein with a different amino acid sequence is known as a missense mutation.
By definition:
- Nonsense mutation is a change in DNA base sequence that results in incomplete protein
- Silent mutation is a change in the DNA sequence that have no effects on the resulting protein
- Frameshift mutation is a change in the DNA sequence by addition or deletion of a base pair resulting in a totally different protein as a result of a change to the reading frame of codons
Hence, only missense mutation is compatible with a single base substitution in DNA resulting in proteins with different amino acid sequences.
