The Byzantines wanted Belisarius to stake everything in a single battle against the Goths in order to prevent starving to death. Because the Goths had surrounded the Romans and were cutting off an incoming supplies, the Romans begged for help from the Byzantines but Belisarius actually waited until reinforcements arrived.
