Though political cartoons can be funny to those that understand them, the ultimate purpose is to persuade the viewer to a political side of an issue.

Political cartoons use images to present their side to an issue. The images they use represent figures or events in society. Based on the images used, how the captions are written, and the overall message of the cartoon, a person can determine the position of the cartoonist. Political cartoons have been used since printed media has existed and found to be more popular during the Enlightenment and after.
