The New Jersey Plan was an idea on how to structure the federal government under the new US Constitution.

This plan, developed by William Patterson, wanted to create a unicameral legislature. This means that the federal government would be made up of one house in Congress. In Congress, each state would have the same amount of representatives, regardless of their population. This was very similar to the structure the United States experienced under the Articles of Confederation. States with large populations felt this was unfair and developed the Virginia Plan instead. Ultimately, elements from both would be taken to develop the Connecticut (aka Great) Compromise, which gave us the structure of Congress we have today.

The Major Purpose that was behind the New Jersey Plan was that it wanted to support and protect the interests of smaller states.

The New Jersey plan was presented by William Paterson and it has eleven resolutions and this plan was presented as an alternative to the Virginia Plan. It was presented in the constitutional convention which took place in Pennsylvania in the year 1787. According to this plan, Each state of the United States should have equal representation in the government and not according to the population of the state which was presented in the Virginia plan. According to the Virginia plan, there was a need for a strong central government as they wanted the government to enforce new laws on states and impose taxes.

Virginia plan was opposed by smaller states as their view was that a proportional representation which was there in the Virginia plan will mean smaller states having less say in the matters of the government as compared to the larger states. New Jersey plan proposed one house legislation that consisted of one legislative body of the Congress and every state will have an equal number of representatives in the government according to the New Jersey Plan.
