After Lincoln was elected, nothing concerning slavery was guaranteed.  While everyone knew something would change, no one knew what.  But several southern states seceded the Union following the election of the Union because instead treating humans like people, they acted like dicks (might not want to use that part in your essay) and kept treating African Americans like animals, even though they were the animals.
