Encomienda was a system of a forced labor popular mostly in Spanish colonies in the Latin America. It was similar to slavery because the native people from the conquered areas were made to work or pay a tribute to the encomenderos - Spanish people who were granted with encomienda for their participation in the successful conquest. The system was officially abolished in 1720.
