Here alkynes get stuck onto metal catalyst surface leading to complete hydrogenation of triple bond by [tex]H_{2}[/tex].

Reaction occurs in SYN-addition fashion where [tex]H_{2}[/tex] adds onto unsaturated bond from same side.
