The Napoleonic Code required family property to be divided among sons and daughters.

The Napoleonic Code is a civil code published by Napoleon Bonaparte in  France 1804, in which many of the ideas of the Revolution had been examined and corrected.

Article 745 of the code states that:  children inherit in the first degree to their parents, mothers, grandparents, without distinction of sex or birthright, and even if they arise from different marriages will be equal successors.
