When adding functions with the same base you simply add the exponents so:
[tex]a^{1/2}*a^{x} = a^{1}[/tex]
[tex]\frac{1}{2}+x = 1 [/tex]
[tex]x = \frac{1}{2} [/tex]
Thus to finish the equation you would say [tex]a^{1/2}[/tex]
