Torvald, who is a very well-intentioned and very benign but patriarchal man, considers that women are girl dolls that need to be protected and enjoyed because of their frail beauty and intellect. He tells Mrs. Linde that she should rather take up embroidery instead of knitting as a leisurely activity since he considers it more graceful and beautiful for men to contemplate. His condescension means well in his very chauvinistic logic, that women are beautiful children humans that need to be guided by adult men and by giving her that unwanted advice he thinks he is making a kind comment that will ultimately benefit the child-woman doll that he is talking to.
