A line passes through the point (-3,4) and it’s y-intercept is (0,-2) , what is the equation of the line that is parallel to the given line and passes through the point (-5,2)

First we have to find the slopes and the points are (-3,4) ,(0,-2) .

[tex] Slope = \frac{-2-4}{0-(-3)} [/tex]

[tex] slope = \frac{-6}{3}=-2 [/tex]

Slope of parallel lines are equal. Therefore the slope of the required line is -2 too .

Using slope intercept form which is

y=m x+b

We have point (-5,2) and slope, m =-2

Substituting the values of x,y and m

2 = -2(-5)+b

2 = 10 + b

Subtracting 10

-8 = b

So we have slope = -2 and y intercept, b=-8. THerefore required equation of line is

y=-2x-8.
