In this speech, Edwards argues that people are wicked sinners, and that they engage in deceitful behaviour even when they know that God will punish them for it. He believes that people do not take the threat of God seriously. Therefore, Edwards reminds people that the risk of Hell is real, and that the only way to avoid it is by repenting and asking God for forgiveness.
