A cylinder has a height of 16 cm and a radius of 5 cm. A cone had a height of 12 cm and a radius of 4 cm . If the cone is placed inside the cylinder as shown, what is the volume of the air space surrounding the cone inside the cylinder?

You're basically saying how much space isn't taken up inside the cylinder. So you have to find the volume of both containers is subtract the cylinder's volume from the cone's volume.

Cylinder V: [tex] r^{2} \pi *h = 5^{2} \pi * 16 = 1256.63706144[/tex]
Cone V: [tex] \ \frac{1}{3} *\pi r^{2} * h = \frac{1}{3} \pi 4^{2} *12 = 201.06 [/tex]
1256.64-201.06 = 1055.58 [tex] cm^{3} [/tex]
