The Kuleschov Effect was popularized by  Soviet filmmaker Lev Kuleshov  in the early 1900s.
When audiences are presented with two sequential shots, the audiences could make a connection on why the characters felt the emotion that they displayed, and allow them to  drive more meaning from the scenes.
