A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another. Waves can transfer energy over distance without moving matter the entire distance. For instance, an ocean wave can travel many kilometers without water itself moving many kilometers, the water instead moves up and down, a motion known as the disturbance. The disturbance travels in a wave and thus transferring energy.
