In his new living room, Kirk installed carpeting on 1/2 of the floor and tile on another 1/4 of the floor. What fraction of the floor is now covered by either carpet or tile?
To find the total amount of floor covered add the amount of carpeting and tiling together. So 1/2 = 2/4, then 1/4 + 2/4 = (1 + 2) / 4 = 3/4. 3/4 of Captain Kirk's floor is covered.
