Compare and contrast active resistance and assimilation as responses by American Indians to U.S. expansion and removal policies between roughly 1800 and 1840. How did the Cherokee differ from the Shawnee as well as Sauk and Fox in the ways they confronted and/or adapted to U.S. expansion? What were some similarities and differences between these two approaches? Which strategy–resistance or assimilation–do you believe was more successful in confronting U.S. expansion? Why do you think so?
