• broad spectrum bacteriostatic
• Often used orally
• Broad spectrum, gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
• May also work against some protozoan infections
• Widespread resistance through 2 major mechanisms:
1) Development of efflux pumps for active ejection of tetracycline
2) Ribosomal protection proteins that prevent binding
Doxycycline used in acne long term
Long duration of action, relatively low toxicity
Also used in bronchitis prevention, and leptospirosis
