When an architect designs a room or rooms, he has to follow certain guidelines or rules to make the whole house more livable. It is important to know some of the standard rules that architects use, not only if we would wish to create a brand-new room, but also to help us understand the existing room we have chosen to decorate. Here are some of these standard rules:

Doors should swing into rooms.
Less space is wasted if the door is near the corner of the room and swings into the corner.
In the house as a whole, all doors—entrance, closet, bathroom—should be grouped together to conserve wall space when possible.
Bedrooms should be planned to have the maximum amount of wall space.
Windows in a bedroom are generally higher on the wall than they are in other rooms to allow space for furniture underneath and to provide more privacy.
Take a look at your room and see if it conforms to the rules previously stated. Identify the good points and the bad points of your room in 150 words. Use the writing space provided with this assignment. As you continue through this unit, you should be able to find ways to improve your room through the techniques and special treatments discussed.
