Writing Assignment: Showing and Figurative Language 30 points
At this point, it is time for you to show some of the things you’ve learned so far about creative nonfiction writing. You are going to practice showing with imagery and dialogue. You are also going to use figurative language. You may choose to develop this writing assignment further and turn it into your final project if you’d like. For now, you will write one to three paragraphs. Please use the following process.
Begin in your writing notebook. Make a list of 10 things of which you are a master. Include talents, skills, hobbies, and character qualities. These can be anything you feel you are good at: making friends, baking cookies, writing poetry, teaching your dog tricks, finding rocks…
Choose one that appeals to you and feel free write anything that comes to mind.
Then think of a person who is connected with this mastery – maybe the person who taught you, or someone who discouraged you from doing it or someone who does it with you.
Write about a scene or event that involves your mastery and your person. Write one to three paragraphs. This will be your writing assignment. Your paragraphs should showrather than tell and should include:
sensory details
dialogue or quotes that are used as dialogue
at least one instance of figurative language besides imagery (metaphor, simile, personification).
