Specific Situations
DIRECTIONS: Whenever you speak, you should use language that is appropriate to the
situation and to the audience. Two sublanguages that you should use only
rarely in most formal speaking situations are jargon and slang. Jargon is the
specialized vocabulary understood by people in a particular group or field.
Slang consists of recently coined words or of old words used in new ways.
Rewrite the following sentences by replacing the jargon or the slang words
in italics with words that are more appropriate for a general audience. Refer
to a dictionary as necessary.
1. Susan worked all night to get the virus out of the computer system. (computer jargon)
